Why We Have A Carnival

RecPlanCopmanthorpe Carnival was originally established to raise funds to create a recreation centre for Copmanthorpe and the surrounding area. Now that the Recreation Centre is established, why are we still raising money and what are we spending it on?

The Recreation Centre is a registered Charity, number 503007.  Its objectives are to create and maintain a centre offering full recreational activities to the general public in Copmanthorpe and district and to encourage the enjoyment by the public of the facilities.

We receive assistance with some costs in the form of grants from the Parish Council; user groups are charged an annual fee and the Sports and Social Club pays rent for the building they use but we receive no funding from City of York Council so we rely on the Carnival for the bulk of our funding.

We provide a sports field for football and cricket and informal recreation, as well as for the Carnival. There are three tennis courts, one of which is also marked for net ball, a bowling green and children’s playground. In addition we have built a club house, a sports hall (about to undergo works to extend its usefulness) and changing rooms. We also host the Scout HQ and a childcare nursery.

All the Recreation Centre facilities are available to the general public of Copmanthorpe and district. The facilities are primarily used by sports clubs but the sports hall is available for private hire by individuals or groups and the sports field is available for informal public recreation when not in use for club activities.  Please visit the Rec Centre website for full details of activities and user groups
